Candy and Braces What to Avoid This Halloween

Halloween is the season of fun, costumes, and of course candy!
But if you’re wearing braces or clear aligners, not every treat is safe for your smile. Some candies can damage brackets, bend wires, or even delay your treatment progress.
At Lightning Orthodontics, we want you to enjoy the holiday and keep your smile healthy. Knowing which sweets to avoid (and which ones you can enjoy safely) will help you make it through Halloween without any orthodontic scares!
Braces are strong, but Halloween candy can test their limits. Sticky, chewy, or hard treats can loosen brackets, bend wires, or get stuck in places that are hard to clean.
Here’s what to look out for:
Sticky candy like caramel, taffy, or gummies can pull brackets off your teeth and bend wires.
Hard candy like jawbreakers or lollipops can crack brackets or cause discomfort if you bite down.
Chewy candy such as licorice and toffee can easily get wrapped around brackets.
Sour candy is extra acidic and can weaken enamel, leaving white spots.
Candy Corn, this one’s a huge NO! It’s sticky, sugary, and hard enough to damage brackets or wires, making it one of the worst Halloween candies for braces.
Even a small piece of these candies can cause damage or extend your treatment time.
If you’re wearing clear aligners, the rules are just as important.
You should always remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything besides water. Sticky or sugary candy can:
Stain or discolor your aligners.
Trap sugar and bacteria against your teeth.
Warp the trays if exposed to heat or certain ingredients (like sticky candy corn or caramel).
When you’re done enjoying a treat, brush and rinse before putting your aligners back in to keep your smile fresh and protected.
The good news? You don’t have to skip all the fun! Here are a few smile-safe treats you can enjoy instead:
Soft chocolate (like Hershey’s or Reese’s cups)
Peanut butter cups (they melt easily and don’t stick to braces)
Soft cookies or brownies
Ice cream or pudding for a smooth, braces-safe option
Even with these options, remember to brush afterward sugar can still lead to cavities and stains if it lingers on your teeth.
If you accidentally eat something sticky or hard, don’t panic!
Check your braces for:
A loose bracket
A poking wire
Candy stuck that won’t come out with brushing
If something feels off, cover the area with orthodontic wax and call Lightning Orthodontics right away for a quick repair. The sooner it’s fixed, the faster you’ll get back on track.
